Catabolism is the set of metabolic pathways that break down molecules into smaller units. In this process, large molecules such as polysaccharides, fatty acids, nucleic acids and proteins are broken down into monomeric units (i.e. monosaccarides, carbon units, nucleotides and amino acids, respectively).
