Low-Carb Micellar Protein Matrix
At the core of SUSTAIN™ lie the two most popular choices of protein powder, whey (in isolated and concentrated fractions) and casein (micellar). These two protein-types display potent effect on inhibiting protein breakdown and promoting protein synthesis, but not if used alone. Whey protein, the “fast-acting” protein, rapidly enters the bloodstream and exerts a considerable effect on increasing muscle protein synthesis (growth) rates. While this is ideal in some circumstances, the rapid entrance and clearance to and from the bloodstream does little to reduce protein breakdown. Casein protein on the other hand, the “slow-acting” protein, coagulates in the stomach forming a more timed-release of amino acids into the bloodstream. This effect raises muscle protein synthesis rates to a lesser extent than whey, but exerts a much more significant effect on protein breakdown inhibition over time and ensures muscle protein synthesis rates remain elevated for upwards of eight hours!

Putting it into Practice
The question here is when to use SUSTAIN™, and the answer is quite simply anytime. While not absolutely ideal for solo post workout nutrition (that accolade is reserved for Replenish™), SUSTAIN™ is optimally formulated to fulfill protein requirements both post workout and throughout the day without the concern that the precious aminos you are drinking are being oxidized rapidly into glucose as is the case for whey protein alone. Each serving of SUSTAIN™ provides 20 grams of a high quality micellar casein and whey protein blend and can be used on its own or in additional to some form of carbohydrates and fat to form a more complete “MRP.”

For an ideal combination of post-workout nutrition, Designer Supplements recommends one serving of Replenish™ immediately after training to rapidly promote protein and glycogen synthesis, followed approximately sixty to ninety minutes later by a serving of SUSTAIN™ along with a whole-food meal to ensure protein synthesis rates remain high.
