In the future, I want to research and create new bodybuilding supplements. Its about time for me to check out some colleges to go to but I dont really know what field this study is placed in. What field of study does this category fall into?

Just do a double major of chemistry and Biology. That should lay down the fundamentals for you.

With the current crop out there - some may not have even finished high school - shoot. ;)

Yeah LOL, seriously though, Biochem majors seemed destined for industrial chemical work. I was just looking for something that he could fall back on(so he could go to med school)if he changed his mind.

Double in Bio Engineering / Chemical Engineering............that way if that market is slow when you get out.........it will be a hell of a lot easier getting another job compared to a Bio/Chem major.........ive also been told that with either of the above engineering majors that it makes getting into med school easier.......

I did Bio and Psych with a couple of minors still not thinking it hampered my chances of medical school though not being of an engineering denomination.

Not saying it would hurt your chances not getting an eng. degree........advisors had only said that with an eng degree it supposedly increased your chances of being accepted like 30-40%......but the reason i said get the engineering degree is because if the job market is slow in the "supplement design" industry and/or doesnt get into med school right off the bat......it would be easier to find a job

But sucessful people will be sucessful no matter what no?

tell ya what...write articles, take up English as a major and you have a better shot in this industry of being heard; of course, you do have to exhibit you have both something to say and that you know your stuff - which is sometimes a daunting task.

Not sure what to say about that engineering thing glee...I was never advised that and see maybe I would be into that now if informed differently. he could always go on and do PhD work and write books while formulating after earning some applicable certifications as an easier option IMO. If it doesn't work out -there's always research fields and teaching to throw your hat into. Hell, I want to teach on the side now...more as a sheer passion, because unless you're full time and on a tenure tract - money isn't in it, so I think I will do like a class or two forthcoming. I haven't taught formally since 2000 and miss it for sure.

There are still many a person with many a post count yet don't really say a lot in those posts. [btw: not speaking of you voo, and for the most part not even this board]

Well, this is likely better defined by post quality rather than number still so I'd say throw out some positives and voila - at least you're an e-celeb in my book! :D

Since we are on the topic. i have a buddy that just got his degree in BioChem and will be getting his masters in something along the lines of chem engineering (I think thats what he said), he said he would be interested in an internship in the supplement field if given the opportunity. Is there any specific direction I should point him?

I guess no one has any idea how I should point him?

Well, here's the thing...I will formally be taking on Exercise Physiology students to run laboratory testing, et al and they will get to do things more supplement-industry related for sure...however, I am unsure how to apply his degree to the actual program I, myself am developing...simply for my love of teaching and nothing more. Trans_isomer fits this category of "intern." He is more of my test subject and I am going to see how we work things out with his school - see there are many things to consider (i.e. - housing, cost-of-living, transport, ACCREDATION, et al). This is NOT easy by any stretch and NOT something many are prepared to embark on, I am sure.

I am certain others in supplement companies define the term as a bit different than formal definition, however following suit with what I have said before in this thread, I am unsure who would be qualified to truly run an "intern"-style program in that way. I can pick out maybe a handful of companies that have true clinical staff (and this is beyond the "poster-child" status of sticking a white coat in an ad campaign btw Stu, and I am really being nice with my comments there in how abused this has become). Many companies remain an office or maybe a warehouse (NOT A LABORATORY) - heck some don't ever really possess their own product in their hands. The fictional tales told by many is depressing...get with someone you trust (may be hard - not only in this industry ... please don't get me wrong, but really moreso any industry even though I have given the inherent problems with this one here).

Let me ask you this - because I am at least a year away from offering up a fully-established program of sorts, what kind of qualifications does your friend have (feel free to send resume, background info, what he is currently doing in school, where he goes/has went for undergrad, etc....anything you may think would be pertinent [please note: I am NOT asking for you to send them by way of the public forum, in fact, I encourage you DON'T DO THIS, but email them to the askdinoiii account in my signature]...I will be able to tell you off the bat if this is something I could offer him or not, but too it still comes down to a lot of red tape usually between myself and his school's administration for ACCREDATION on it so even if I thought I could use him in a way, it may be more of a bottom-line job offer rather than "internship," which is why I asked for the things I did).

Thanks Dinoiii, what you have offered is more than expected. I will be getting his resume sometime soon, probably this weekend. He has expressed interest, and due to the fact that I would love to help anyone that could potentially help the industry, I felt obliged to see how I could help him. Even if you dont have an "internship" or a possible job for him, any help in pointing him in any direction would be great.
I thought it was funny you had to make sure I didnt post his resume publicly, surely you think more of me than to think I would do that:D

I got my MS in EXSC and Sport Nutrition- we learned a little bit about supps, but it was mostly nutrition courses, biomechanics, training theory, advanced A and P, O-Chem, Bio-Chem, and research methods and analyses (sucked)

Best way to learn in this field is to research on your own- there are a TON of good resources these days....
