I was writing a paper for a class and I was wondering if someone knows why or could send me to a link that explains why it is that Ephedrine can still be sold even during the time it was supposed to be illegal.

ephedrine was still sold because it was never made illegal. ephedra as banned, ephedrine hcl and psuedo ephedrine have always been legal

We talked about this in a previous thread, I actually posed the question, and from what I remember of the thread it is mainly because the Ephedrine HCL and Pseudoephedrine are in a lot of medicine's for asthma and stuffy noise stuff. I'm pretty sure that is the main reason.

Actually, it would be more interesting for you to post something showing that ephedrine is legal. Where did you hear that?

If ephedrine was illegal, they would have to ban cough medicine and a myriad of other otc medications.

I believe you are referring to the FDA bad on herbal Ephedra, also known as Ephedra Alkaloids. This took place in April of 2003, but was recently overturned by a Utah judge. Thus, both chemical Ephedrine and herbal Ephedra are currently both legal. We all suspect that legislation will be written to ban herbal ephedra on a congressional level.

But it's not legal everywhere, the states that had laws in place before the nationwide ban, those laws are still in place and thus illegal in just those states. I know one of them is illinois and I think New Jersey is on there also.

I wouldn't be shocked if Ephedrine HCL was banned eventually. However I believe heaven and earth will have to be moved for pseudoephedrine to be banned. Your talking Ny-Quil, Sudafed, Robitussin, etc.. being pulled from the market if that happens, way too much money being made by major corporations for it to go away silently.

I believe you are referring to ephedra alkaloids, not ephedrine hcl. Ephedrine hcl is legal in all 50 states. This has become a big confusion for people.

Ephedrine HCl: Chemical ephedrine that is commonly sold in cough medicine. This cannot be sold as a weight loss aid. It can only be sold as a bronchial dilator. Because this is one of the key ingredients in Meth, the FDA limits the amount a customer can buy within a 30 day period (9 grams).

Ephedra Alkaloids: This is herbal ephedrine also known as Ma Hung. Used in many fat loss products. Banned in many states (Illinois, New York, California, New Jersey…) just recently banned by the FDA but overturned.

Yes I was referring to the Ephedra alkaloids that was recently overturned by the Utah judge, sorry for not being clear enough.
