View Full Version : High Rep, Low Weight vs Low Rep, High Weight

Guys,

A co-worker was talking about the difference between low rep, high weight lifting and high rep, low weight lifting. They stated high weight, low rep will build "strength" (e.g., lifting power) whereas high rep, low weight will build "mass" or "size" of muscle.

I'm not for sure I believe this. Opinons?

thats a decent rule of thumb however not true for everyone. I put on tons of quality mass using low reps and high weight

high weight low rep has always helped me put on size and strength, where as low weight high rep has helped me maintain/cut and lose some bf

Hmm. I need the perfect combination then. :P

I do 8 to 13 reps per exercise, and if I can do more than 13, I increase the weight by 10 pounds. I'm definitely seeing a strength increase, but not much in size.

same here...high weight; low reps for mass. I Usually go for a lower weight and high reps when cutting

Hmmm.

My problem is I'm wanting size more than strength at the moment. I weigh ~115lbs, but can bench ~150+. So I should probably do low weight, high rep-- right?

imo if you want size do more weight less reps--like in the neighborhood of 6 reps per set

Well, now I'm getting confused...

So is the consensus high weight and low rep for strength and low weight and high rep for MASS/SIZE?

I'm roughly 5'4"/115lbs. Wanting SIZE. :P

10-13 reps with about 60-65% of my max weight helped me gaining strength and size. I do excercises slowly (you can't do tricks, can't help you with other muscles) 4-1-3 tempo with very short breaks betwwen sets. I think it's very individual which system makes your body work harder.
There's only one way how to find out the truth: try both ways! You're gonna see/feel what's the best for you.

He's actually got it backwards, using heavy weight and low reps builds mass, and power strength. Doing low weight and high reps will harden the muscle, cut you up, and builds endurance strength.

So let me ask you guys for your opnion..I am trying to put on size. i am 6'0 187lbs.. Should i be lifting 60-65% of my max or 80-85%..I need to get as big as possible of course strong too..Then when football comes around i will go lighter weight and more reps to tone up?

go with the heavier weight and lower reps for size and then when your ready to cut change it up. But you have to get that weight up there for the mass
