I for one am sick and tired of hearing and reading about the Congressional hearings on steroids in baseball, as if our representatives do not have far more serious issues to tackle. Come on already, with due respect to those families that lost their children, said to be the fault of steroids, how many actual known cases of death can be directly associated to steroid use. By huge contrast, how many deaths or serious health conditions can be directly attributed each year to the misuse, over prescribing, etc,, etc., of prescription medicines (aka, DRUGS!)? How many deaths or serious health problems have ever been associated to the PH's that were recently banned in comparison to prescription drugs. And how many deaths have ever been attributed to the use of vitamin and herbal supplements compared to the "drug" industry?
I am not condoning the use of "illegal steroids", but I do believe this should have been left in the hands of doctors to prescribe and monitor, instead of creating another black market, where "kids" can get there hands on anything if they want to. And anybody that knows even just a little about all this, knows that there is much more danger from the pharmaceutical industry than there is from PH's, or even properly monitored steroid use. I have never used steroids, but all the evidence tells me this is the case...IMO.
The drug companies together are one of the most powerful economic forces in the world. Do not believe that they do not have a lot to do with what is going on in the world today, concerning the control and use of vitamins and herbal remedies. Congress, on the other hand, well, they do love the publicity, don't they. Such as the case with the current hearings.
I think enough has been done and said in the media already, concerning steroids. If it was a problem in baseball, that is the past. As a country, and as our representatives, Congress needs to focus on the many much more serious issues that face us as a nation, and the world in general. Let MLBB take care of this, as with all the negative publicity, they have certainly taken steps to do so. Frankly, it really does not bother me if Mark McGwire or Barry Bonds took steroids in the past. I am sure it happened in many other sports as well. As far as I am concerned that is their business. The ridiculously high salaries of athletes these days and cost of a ticket to a professional sports event is, to me, more bothersome.
One final thing about the drug industry. This rant is in no way meant to take away from the many good things they have brought out and the new discoveries. But if congress wants to use some valuable time, why not look into all the problems with the drug companies, AMA, the FDA, and health insurance. The US is one of only two or three countries that allow TV ads for drugs. Think about that. It's no wonder that so many people in this county are on drugs that do them more harm than good, when so many of these problems could successfully be treated with proper diet, and vitamin/herbal supplementation. But this is exactly what the drug companies do not want to happen. Right!?
