View Full Version : NO Products and Pre-Workout Protein

Hey folks, was hoping some of you might have some thoughts on this subject.
As I understand them, NO products (e.g. NO-Xplode, SuperPump250, etc.) are best taken on an "empty stomach," roughly 30-45 minutes before your workout. And, if I'm right about this, what "empty stomach" means is that you should be taking them roughly 2 hours after your last meal and at least 30 minutes before your next. Kind of a tight window . . .
Anyhow, I've recently come across in several places (mainly the muscle mags) the recommendation to take 20g whey protein right before working out, along with some carbs. So what do you guys think? Would it be a good idea to take 1-2 scoops NO-Xplode about 45 minutes before my workout, and then a serving of whey right as I'm about to begin the workout? I'd like to, but I don't want to undermine the NO-Xplode.
Many thanks to all. Hope you're getting huge and putting up huge numbers! (I'm getting psyched for squats in a couple hours.)

Hehe,
the ole pre-/peri-/post- workout discussions. I think one of the most important things is that you don't get caught up in all the various discussions about this person's protocol and that person's. Just stick to one.
Myself - well entrenched in the following thread, you find many of the ideas that I employ for myself and clients. It will go hand-in-hand with a book to be released at the early part of next year:

Take a read and tell me what you think. Deal?

It only takes about 25 mnutes for your stomach to be considered "empty". Not 2 hours.
I take my protein shake an hour before workout, and then my preworkout supplement about 45 minutes after that.
-This is just how I do it, not saying it's the best way, nor the correct way, but it is how I do things.

By your definition it takes 25 minutes to be considered "empty" however, there have been well-established gastrointestinal transit times in the literature you have apparently discovered to be incorrect.
FYI: GI transit is governed by something called peristaltic waves, these can in effect be trained to happen a bit more intermittently, however - generally speaking they should coincide with hypothalamic functioning for your best chance at reaching body composition goals as governed by what it takes to maintain a positive nitrogen balance. 1-3 times per day, you do get "mass movements" but these are VERY suspect and will NOT allow you to keep positive nitrogen balance - they would be tied to your 25 minute theory if they in effect were NOT more colonic in nature (well, ok I would give small and large intestine, but post-gastric and also considering what gastric emptying hormonal effects do as well).
I in fact did read your disclaimer (i.e. - an "in your opionion" type of comment) that it is only how you did it - however, you first dismissed my 2 hour statement - only reason I chose to offer retort here.

I'm not taking sides here, just offering MY experiments and MY outcome.
I have tried several different ways of pre-w/o meals.. i've tried 2hrs. be4 the workout.. 1hr be4, 45mins be4, 30mins be4...along with the supps taken 30mins be4.
2hr. be4- I notice my concentration lost due to the fact of being hungry. Therefore NOT a good time for me. strength was there but just not alot of concentration
1hr. be4- Felt great.. strength the same
45mins be4- felt great... " "
30mins be4- felt good... " ".. just kinda full
To me i dont think it makes much difference when you eat your pre w/o meal. I've gained the same on all the different times..
However, i do believe that cardio in the morning be4 breakfast is best for cutting down.
just my .02..

Agreed. I tend to like a fuller stomach on heavy Squat days etc. I am much stronger, but as far as hypertrophy and nutrient timing I'm not sure I can go head to head with the likes of dinoiii. @ 2 hrs I'm low on gas-For Sure. MVP

There just is NO WAY I can workout if I have not eaten for 2 hours. I may be different than most here, I just can't do it. I have felt the same effects from my preworkout supplements by waiting about a half hour.
I don't agree with taking your preworkout supplement RIGHT AFTER you eat, or drink a shake, however I feel a half hour later is just fine.
and Yes I did state that it was just my opinion to try and stay away from replies like yours. ;)
I just have hard time working out for an hour after going two hours without food, and I have found that I still feel maximum effects from supplements after just waiting a half hour. Many people are different however.

Perhaps it is more appropriate to address what everyone is eating that is making them hungry (in fact, so much so) that normal (nor)epinephrine surges, et al are not staving off hunger or perhaps it is the workout intensity that should be increased.
I will make sure you Click get a copy of my book - in fact, I will hand deliver it first. ;)

As said it is best to go into the workout on an empty stomach, being in a catabolic state as well during the workout.
Below is a very good read alongside the last pages of my thread dinoiii linked above.

Well, at least I know I'd get a read out of ya...whether we agree or not - hell, I am sure we don't agree with 100% of anything we read in this industry so I won't take it to heart. Deal? ;)
