Inflammation is key to recovery. Inhibiting it will inhibit your results as well.

Check out medline or pubmed, search for ibuprofen and effects on protein synthesis.. Taking it too often isn't too wise, acetaminophen (Tylenol) is worse, especially with the liver in play.. ;)

Just take 400 units of Vitamin E and 500 mg of Vitamin C post workout. This will help with recovery too. Just take it with your shake.

It's the bromelain from pinapple. This is also a very good enzyme for helping to digest protein post workout.

IBprofin, aka Motrin is an anti-inflammatory but its harsh on your stomach. Make sure you take it with meals or a big snack cuz it will eat away the stomach lining over time...which isn't good.

Anti-inflammatory items, inclusive of antioxidants (Vit C, E, beta carotene) too should be avoided in the "IMMEDIATE" (defined < 1-hour) post-workout realm.

As mentioned, while NSAIDS (inclusive of aspirin-containing products, et al) could cause gastritis ("itis" implies inflammation) with secondary ulceration with chronic use due to protective prostaglandin (PGE1) degradation, MOST recent studies don't really show a dose-dependent difference in "preventative" status gained from higher-dosing parameters - again, if you're thinking solely about prophylaxis versus actual treatment.

I wrote an article in May 2006 IronMan that discussed the role in enzyme supplementation on inflamation and DOMS. It's critical to supplement with Protease and sitosterol enzymes post workout to mediate the inflamatory response to exercise. Currently, there's only one product that does this: Labrada Sorenzyme.

I've used this product for a while now and I'm impressed with it - it speeds my recovery and I'm not nearly as sore as I used to get. I hate painkillers because I know they inhibit protein synthesis and stop muscle gain - so enyzmes are totally the way to go.
