A quick little fact about that Marine Corps: The ideal Marine isn't Ronnie Coleman in digital cammies or Jay Cutler in a dress blue uniform. The ideal Marine (according to Marine Corps Standards) is about 5'7'' to 5'9'' (unless in a ceremonial drill unit) and about 150 pounds of lean agile muscle. As stated in previous post the USMC PFT isn't to concerned with muscular strength as much as muscular endurance. When analyzed this makes sense, you don't want a ginormous beast trudging around, although he may be intimidating and could throw an adversary at least 20 miles he would not do as well as an in shape smaller person on a 30+ mile hump(hike). I, myself, love to throw weights around. I am 5'101/2''(gotta have that extra half haha) and currently weighing in at 198 to 200 lbs. I run the three mile in 19 mins and 15 seconds I do 20 pull ups and 100 crunches which isn't perfect, but it isn't bad. I would graciously accept any tips on how to achieve an impressive physique while maintaining my mobility, if possible. thank you.

I am gonna say that you have to have your diet in order.. Keep it clean and lean..
High Protein and not TOO many carbs..You can eat carbs but i see that some people will get "carb" fat if to many are eatin. You just have to listen to your body.
Protein intake shoule be about 1.7-2.5g per lbs. of body weight. Get in about 6-8meals a day. be sure to keep it lean..fish, chicken, turkey etc..

First of all who are you to say what the Marine Corps. wants in a Marine. That PFT is for sucked up skinny cross country runners. A typical Marine is a Marine that is a BAD ASS! A Marine is someone who is not afraid to throw down with someone bigger or better than him and comes on top in the end! In order to do that you need Muscle Mass not a cross country body. A real fight doesnt last longer than 5-10 secounds and in war your life expectancy is 10-15 secods. So, whats the use of running 3 miles under 18 minutes, doing 20 pullups and 100 situps for a perfect PFT? I never agreed with the Corps regulations. Marine Corps. motto is "Work harder not smarter"!
Enough said to my fellow Devil Dog!
P.S. Open your eyes, the corps isnt everything!

I was in the Army for a little under eight years and I went from being 5'7 130lbs. to 5'8 205lbs. I always maxed my APFT, but I always had to work on running especially when my weight started to go up, b/c my metabolism started to slow. You're right when you say that the military generally wants slim, wiry, and not too tall of a soldier. I was in the 82d Airborne and it didn't pay to be tall, b/c you always had to duck when you exited the airplane door. Anyhow, just keep the diet clean and run on your off time. It really doesn't pay to be too big in combat especially in the desert. Its too damn hot to worry about the guy that needs alot of water. Trust me, during my tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, I always lost ten to fifteen pounds because of the heat. That being said, I'm now about 215lbs and I hate running. Good luck and don't blame the corps for their standards, b/c there's a method to the madness. Also, don't juice in combat, b/c you'll need the endurance in combat.

good advice solomon, i enter the army at 135 and 16 years later im sitting at 200lbs, im 5'10". i used to run like the wind, but now i have to struggle to finish the run in the alloted time, lol. i have put on almost 40 pounds in the last 3 years and have done 2 deployments to iraq in that time frame. the only way to increase your run time is to run.

Random,
I am by no means any where near your height and size 5ft6 173 rate now. But while in the Corp I was 5ft6 165 and found just like the guys here said, just run. I know when I was working up for the PFT i would run about 5 or more miles,at at a 7min. pace that way when it came to the 3 miles i was already conditioned for the 5 so it would be no problem to bust out the 3.

Devil dog - you already have the pullups and situps good....so you just need to work on that run time.....just like stated above - train by running 5-7 miles, you will be surprised how much easier 3 miles will become!
Good luck and Semper Fi!!!!

you a buds dud?? lol Seals have a nice little cross fit setup these days. seems to work wonders for all the devil pups at the gym... I prefer to stay huge.. could give a f*** about my pft (as long as I keep 200 base plus w/e my run is I'm straight it's an instant 1st class) and I'm in the 01's so I don't need endurance, even with a victor unit. You just need to pick and choose which things work best for you, and stick with it. I lift like I did when I was a civ, but I also get fed some nasty food (in terms of healthy) instead of a strict diet.
