I must say that this was dinoiiis idea to do this thread based on experiences that i had when i was injured while lifting. First let me explain what happen to me 4 years ago now i guess it was i was doing squats at the gym. I was doing a weight that i had done before when all of the sudden my left knee gave out. I heared it pop and then went down like a heap. luckly i had the saftey bars in place for the bar. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance and the next day had surgery to repair a torn acl. I was on crutches for 6 months with a brace on my knee. I tried to keep lifting my upper body but never relized how much you need the support of your legs for even a bicep work out. I stopped lifting and lost 45lbs but body fat went through the roof. During this time i also got divirced to add to my stress level. But after the divirce was over my knee was almost done with therapy and ready to finish therapy. Thats when I met the love of my life my second wife. She encourage me to get back into weight trainning and to go full bore, and if i was lazy she would threaten to drive me to the gym and strap my but to the bench machine. Once i got that motivation back and got my diet back incheck the rest was history. It took me almost 2.5 to get to where i am today which is way past even before the surgery.

I hope that this will help anyone else out there that was injured and would like to talk about it and get some help getting back on track. Let me know what you guys think

Looks like everything worked out for the best in the end Max...Must have been tough/painful.

I was playing hockey (my first love) in a league during last summer break (end of May) and I was going for a puck through a scrum of people. I was flying because once i got that puck I had all the open ice in the world. When i got there someone tried to poke the puck away and someone else tried to lay the body on me. The poke checking stick went between my legs and I was hit from behind, falling headfirst straight into the boards.

Instinctively I turned my head away and my head was forced all the way pressed against my left shoulder against the boards and i fell on top of my head/right shoulder to the point where they made almost a 180 degree angle. I was furious because of the cheap shot and I jumped up almost immediately to throw blows at the kid who threw the cheap shot. When i got up and tried to take a swing with my right arm I didnt get too far until I felt the most immense pain in my shoulder. I went to the bench and sat for a while and just thought i twisted my neck funny and I'd be alright (my adrenaline still flowing). In about 5 minutes I started feeling the most agonizing pain in my neck and shoulder. A few minutes later I started vomiting and i was just in misery.

I went home and tried to shower and my mother (a nurse) walked in the door, took one look at me and rushed me to the ER. The muscles were strained and the bone broken. They gave me perks (enough for 2 days) and sent me home with a few types of braces to keep it still and told me to eliminate using it for 4 weeks, and gave me a list of exercises to do once it "felt better" and referred me to an orthoscopic.

After 3-4 weeks it felt almost better and I began doing the exercises they gave me. While doing an exercise where i "climbed the wall" with my fingers, I felt a giant pop and felt great pain. For the next 2 weeks weeks the bone would pop in and out of alignment regularly (bout every 20 minutes). I went back to an ortho and he gave me a new type of brace to use (figure eight). I used that with a sling until the beginning of august and it felt well enough to do the simple exercises again. I went from 205lbs 13%bf to about 200lbs 25%bf before i began working out again. All i did was eat junk, it was terrible. The fattest I have ever been.

A week or two into october I start weight lifting again using VERY light weights and sets of 25. End of october I went to sets of 12, a week or two into November sets of 8, and by thanksgiving i was back to my normal weight lifting techiques of 4-6 reps.

When I first began working out, mentally I just wasnt the same. Psychologically I still had a broken collarbone....I'd favor my left always and my lifts were always VERY crooked or my right arm would quit way before my left. It took me a long time to trust myself again, it was awful.

Oddly enough lately I've been getting pains in that area. I dont know if its the cold weather, precipitation, or if I just need to rest it.

man its weird when you go through something and are surprised to hear that others have gone through the same thing even tho its not an uncommon thing. ive lifted weights ever sinse high school. when all the other kids were partying on friday and saturday me and my buddy were working out. i was also playing baseball and one year hurt my shoulder from throwing too hard, not warming up right. well it just got worse and worse, i didnt know what to do. i wasnt the kind that went to the doctor for anything unless it was life threatening. well i never had anything life threatening happen so i never went to the dr. anyways finally i decided i needed to a break from lifting to let the shoulder heal and i swear to god i found out quickly how much the excercize meant to me. i became very depressed. ate poorly. ended up messing up my whole senior year. eventually i got back and have lifted weights ever sinse until about two years ago when i switched to cardio because of very high cholesterol. i know now that weight lifting can also be effective lowering chol. but i didnt have the right diet and the cardio worked even with the wrong diet. well now i just started lifting again and man i am sore but its all good. when im sore i smile because i know its a good pain and im going forward. thats the key to life, going forward, even if slowly. max and wedgylx' stories were very encouraging. thanks

your story also was very inspiring i think alot of us just go out and lift weight and never have any problems with it or really relize how important that part of our life is to us or how much it helps our self esteem and helps us just feel better about who we are
