View Full Version : SuperHydration

Hello.
Not for sure if this is that correct board or not; however, the question is about SuperHydration. I've read a couple books by Dr. Darden Ellington (Bowflex guy...) and he speaks very highly of superhydration---drinking LOTS of water daily.
Any thoughts or suggestions about this? I've been drinking about 60 oz/day of pure H20 (which is a LOT for me) and I've noticed that I'm sleeping better at nights, but that's about the only advantage I currenlty see.
Thanks.

Drinking lots of water helps your skin, and even helps you lose weight. As well as obviously keeping you hydrated lol.
However I have heard drinking obscene amounts of water isnt good for your kidneys. Is that true Dinoiii?

noob-up your water intake, 60 oz isnt even 8 glasses (which is recommended for the common person) if you take any sort of supplements ie protein or creatine you need to drink a lot more than that to digest it properly. just carry around a water bottle with you and suck it down every chance you get.
too much water is not good for you, but i doubt any of us have to worry about too much water, i dont know what the number is, but i know you would have to drink a shitload for it to be unhealthy

I can't tell you how much I hate being on that side of the examination table.
This whole bb experience though has contributed to a greater empathy with my own patients as exemplified with situations like the one above.

Thanks for the info!!!
Question--- is there some way you can quantify how much 'too much' is in a short period of time? I think I'm way in the safe zone, but was just curious. I sometimes drink ~40oz in about 30 mins, but then I'll probably have several hours before I drink pure water again.

does your body get dehydrated waiting that long for more water after that long of a break

I don't think so....BUT, since I've doubled my water intake (on a daily basis), I HAVE to drink at least 60 oz of H20/day or my LIPS get COMPLETLY dry. Kind of weird... Previously, I probably averaged 15-30oz of pure water a day.

thats good tho that means your body is sucking up all that good water. I drink so much water that i have to have a large glass next to my bed at night cause i get up very thirsty

Well thats kind of it max, but not really.
When you increase your intake, your body can still only use so much...after its own homeostatic set point, it actually increases the urinary clearance rate. There are all sorts of fancy transport mechanisms too lengthy for discussion but again they can only transport so much water at a time.
There are two things that can happen: 1. cause the cells of your body to swell if you exceed clearance -or- 2. your hypothalamus can govern an increased urinary output as a check mechanism to hopefully avoid any detrimental effect.
For point 1, think of it this way: If you have an 8 gallon box and are trying to cram in 10 gallons - where does the 2 gallons go? Well of couse the box will likely swell first, but you are likely to increase its size only up to the maximum the box can take water in - extra spills out or cause the box to eventually break. Think of the box as your cells.
For point 2, you may actually increase the thirst feeling through your thalamus after signaling from the hypothalamus notes you are getting too much water so it is ok to excrete more and this in turn feeds back to the brain again to say you want more when you are in fact fully saturated.
To gague how much is too much. This is relatively simple - urine is supposed to be clear if you are fully saturated. When you first note your urine stream to be clear, it is time to ease up on the water for a little bit. I guess you can say there is a case of being "too clear!"
And about X Factor (Arachidonic Acid) Max, later today - I PROMISE!!! You'll see why it has taken so long. A new thread will appear entitled "The X Factor Debates: Round I" - keep your eyes peeled!

yeah and keep an eye on sides...I have posted part I of what will probably be a minimum of 3 parts (potentially up to 5)not including Bill's potential retorts. Still keep in mind that though these physical results may be astonishing, I am not by any means guaranteeing all will be well on the inside.

I reall hate that getting up in the middle of the night crap to go pee all the time. Im int he military so natural we have been taught to hydrate as much as possible. I was forced to hydrate when I first got in fo rmy own good but now I yell at my marines to drink more water. I drink about 2 gals a day. I know when my body is thirsty. Its almost like crack now. Im not just drinking it cuz in thirsty its like my body is saying hey butthole feed me....LOL I get the dry lips too. But I also work in a warehouse that stays at 80 degrees....it sucks huh? I work in a ware house thats 80 degrees all the time but my little bro is just getting back from iraq where its like 120 degrees all the time. boo hoo for me...LOL Its funny because im about a foot shorter than him im 5'7 and hes 6'2 and were the same weight 185. Alright i have to go...pee...lol

i consume at least 1.5-2 gallons a day. I just carry a 32 oz. water bottle around with me, refill it 6-8 times a day and i'm set. I probably pee at least 1-2 times an hour 8)
BTW, I did once read a news story where a college kid rushing for a frat house died a few hours later after bonging 3 gallons of water  I think it caused his blood salt to drop to a fatally low level.
