The 2006 Transammy Awards

Introduction

The year was 1959; a group of Americans that head the recording arts industry called the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS; commonly called the Recording Academy) decided to hand out 28 “prizes” to recognize achievement in the music industry, the Gramophone Awards. The awards are named for the trophy which the winner receives - a small gilded statuette of a gramophone, handcrafted by Billings Artworks. The name given to such prizes evolved into what later would be called the Grammy Awards for short – plus as is true with everything it was a much more marketable title.
The Grammy’s usually held in February as the last of the “big three” music award shows (the American Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards classically sit as the other two), are considered the approximate equivalent to the Oscars, in the music world. Like the Oscars, the Grammy’s, which currently have bumped up to 105 categories within 30 genres (new genres continue to appear) of music are voted upon by peers - voting members of the Recording Academy - rather than being based upon popularity (as with the BMAs and the AMAs).
Unlike the Academy Awards, for which the eligibility period begins January 1, the eligibility period for the Grammy’s begins October 1, which results in September being considered the Christmas sales period for the music industry (in which artists generally release big albums to qualify for the next year's Grammy). Therefore, these unusual eligibility requirements offer the recording or music video must be released between October 1 and midnight September 30 of the given Grammy year.

Some feel that because Grammy voters tend to vote conservatively, and are marketed to by record companies, the most widely-recognized Grammy’s tend to go to either well-established artists or those being hyped by the recording industry. Hence, the Grammy’s are not taken seriously by some musicians and music fans. In fact, many artists who are placed in high regard, artistically, by many fans and critics (such as Elvis Presley, Mariah Carey, Garth Brooks, Pink Floyd, Kenny Rogers, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Pixies and The Smiths) have only been awarded very few Grammy’s.

In 1986, the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment) attempted to mimic the honors shown by the Recording Academy and presented the first ever Slammy Awards. This first awards show of its type saw only four categories handed out in Baltimore, Md that year. The following year, in its first real broadcast, the Slammy’s bumped up that tally to 14 – the length of their actual pay-per-view cards. Unfortunately, these were a subset of awards that showed obvious staging – perhaps indicative of its entertainment nature and this set of awards too fought harsh criticisms which led to a nine year hiatus before transient re-emergence.

And then their were three...Introducing the SSDA

The Sports Supplement sector of the dietary supplement industry has been devoid of such a set of prestigious awards. Prestige here, I am defining as that shown by being awarded recognition by the first ever Sports Supplement Design Academy (SSDA).

The SSDA will be comprised of 1-3 members (per company’s own selection process) of each sports supplement company that will fill in ballots (released later this week) centering on categories chosen by sports supplement users own responses. Each company will unfortunately be limited to selection of ONLY supplements OUTSIDE the umbrella designated as either their company and/or affiliate (i.e. – AX + ALRI must vote outside of that particular subsection). For each ballot to count, company owners, reps, and distributors part of the SSDA will be asked to fill out a MINIMUM of 18 out of 28 categories. Total votes will be tallied and the top company in each category will receive an actual statuette designated a “Transammy!” Additional benefits to an award of this caliber will be assigned at a latter date.

What’s In a Name

There could not be considered a more vital component to a sport supplement user’s arsenal of products than plain ole protein. While normally considered catabolic in nature, the breakdown of proteins’ various amino acids need not always be deemed in the bastardized light. If catabolic processes could not be achieved, all amino acids would be deemed essential and non-essential would be a term unfamiliar to the science world.

The first step in the catabolism of most amino acids is the transfer of their alpha-amino group to alpha-ketoglutarate. The products are an alpha-keto acid (derived from the original amino acid) and glutamate. Alpha-ketoglutarate plays a unique role in amino acid metabolism by accepting the amino groups from other amino acids, thus becoming glutamate. Glutamate produced by transamination can be oxidatively deaminated , or can be used as an amino group donor in the synthesis of nonessential amino acids. This transfer of amino groups from one carbon skeleton to another is catalyzed by a family of enzymes called aminotransferases (formerly called transaminases). All amino acids, with the exception of lysine and threonine, participate in transamination at some point in their catabolism.

To Sports Supplement Users

This is the time to assign categories. The first set of categories – totaling 28 – will be decided by you! Email absivs_revenge@hotmail.com with all ideas ... POLLING BEGINS TODAY (1/1/06) and ENDS NEXT MONDAY AT MIDNIGHT (1/9/06). ALL categories will go into final vote based on results. The more categories you would like to see what supplement company owners, etc... think about their competitor, the better awards subset you will be awarded with. A full list will go into one final vote between 1/10/06 and 1/17/06. Subsequently official ballots will be distributed to company owners, reps, distributors and be due by 2/3/06. The official final tally of the awards will be in 2/10/06. Personalized Transammy’s to the winners be sent out 3/1/06. Additional royalties announced in the weeks to come.
