RAW Squat Vs. Safety Squat Vs. Squat with Straps
I've personally never used wraps or a suit. I think the only alteration of squat I have ever done is the box squat and pause squats (rest the weight on the support bar to develop the fast twitch muscle fibers).
Could anyone explain the benefits to these other variation of squatting. I've watched some videos and it only seems like they are easier to do. Except for the straps... Why would you not just add more weight?

safety squat brings the back a ton into play and also tosses your forward. For your first few times your weight will drop heavily.
Squat with a suit straps up is a nice for taking maxes thats about it. I never trained with my straps up.

ive never used wraps eather, i guess if i was up over 700lbs ide try it ,but ide get some practice in before then using around 405 just to see how it felt and how my balance would be,also same with the suite.
Never used a suite eather i imagine it gives you a extra boost in the lifts.
Ive tried benching with a shirt 1nce but cant stand those things, wish benching was just raw.
Resone why some guys rely on the dang things to do alot of the push for them, im sure youve seen those nuckle heads before.
i think its kinda like the theory if you use straps for pulldowns etc, all the time you kinda take away the abuility to get good grip strength.
So for those just starting out i think they should leave straps, wraps, suites, shirts outta the picture till they can get some strength built in the knees and tendons wrists forearms, back etc,
then when things get to the max out or real heavy stuff, try the support for saftey. my 2 cents...

Well I've done all three and they differences.
Raw Squat well it is just that, but I seem to see lifters in the raw tend to take a closer stance and tend to bend a little more forward. I notice that with me as I get to the heavier weights too. Perhaps I need more core development or glute/ham strength not really sure. I don't like doing raw but I did it just to say I did it in a meet and this is what I did, because you always get flak about doing squats and bench when you use suits and shirts. BTW, my best squat in a meet was 500lbs @225lbs body weight.
SSB squats are fun, I like them because I can hit big weights and of course I use a suit (straps down) or briefs and knee wraps. Unlike the other guy I find I can keep my form better and sit straight up as I squat down but I like to hold on to the squat post and have the bar balance on my shoulders, and it does balance nicely even with 700lbs for me, I do 500x5 no knee wraps. I find that I can move downward a little faster and this is good to get use to the heavier weights.
Squat with Straps??
Not sure what you mean there. If you are talking about suits and the straps up on your shoulders then yes.
I'll talk about suits first.
They are an aide, yes, but you just can't put one on and expect to do 200lbs over your best raw squat, it takes training adn probably a few alterations on thesuit too. The best suits to get are the ones with straps that have velco on them so you can ajdust the tension on your shoulders and get the suit up tight in your crouch. You have to learn how the suit is going to go down because these things will do their own thing. They will "load" as you start the squat and by the time you get to parallel the suit is stretched out as far as it can go this is the "load". Once you hit parallel and you strat to come up you are releasing the load and it will actually help pull you up. Now novices tend to put too little weight on have the suit and straps up and will attemp to squat, but since the weight is light and the suit has nothing to push it down the novice lifter tries to pull himself and weight down to parallel cause him to lean forward and even falling forward.
You always here "Sit Back and Squat" and this isno more true than when you do squats with suits.
Knee wraps, I like just because now at my age if feels better than raw, but I still train squats raw till I get to 80 or 90% of my max then I put on wraps. They do help and like any thing else there is a special way to put them on. Some say they only get about 50lbs from them I fell I get close to 100lbs.
Raw or Equipped either is good, increase the raw strength and the equipped strength goes up too.
