I was discharged for med reasons from MCRD Parris island about 3 years ago. I am getting ready to recieve my paper work back on whether i can get a waivor to leave or not. I was jsut curious if anyone could shed some light on what active duty life is like (on base) after training. (mainly how is the living, finding women, working, liberty etc....

Hey... well I will give you my honest to God opinions here:

I entered MCRD San Diego weighing 233 lbs, benching 405 for 3, doing 43 pullups and was beyond cocky.

I left MCRD SD weighing 172lbs, benching 185lbs for one, doing 12 pullups, and was beyond respectful LOL!!

I am currently stationed at Camp Schwab Okinawa with Combat Assault Battalion, and enjoy it somewhat, but should have stayed stateside.

Boot camp and your combat training are the only crappy parts in terms of mental/physical abuse. Once you get to your MOS School, you will start enjoying the Corps much much more.

When given the choice of station, NEVER pick overseas, that was my mistake, now I am in Japan hating life LOL. We have a prick 1st Sgt, so every M/W/F we do a 5-8 mile run with hardcore calisthenics, but usually PT is fun and easy, (wrestling, football, volleyball, light runs, circuit courses, MCMAP, etc)

The only thing that makes this island livable is the insane amount of gym equipment and some of the bros that work here with me. IF you re-enter recruit training, make sure you have at least 20 pullups and a fair run time, your life will be soo much easier. If you have any other questions let me know.

Thanks alot RA! I actually plan on going 03 myself. tryin for 0311. I was at parris island up untill about training day 35 or so befor i was discharged. Got my physical friday and than well see if I get the waivor. I already lost some weight while craning the cardio. i can do 20 pullups. 106 crunches in the 2 minutes the only thing that lags is the runnig which i would get 3 miles in 24 minutes or so.... well see what happens Ill keep you al lposted. I am praying that i get a second chance.

As much as RA s right. I disagree on one simple point........choose overseas and hope you get it. It is definately easier to do your year overseas during your first year. I ended up doing my Okie tour during my last year and it sucked eggs. I would have rather done it during my first...then i would have had something to look forward to instead of something to dread. I believe it is like 75 % of all active duty Marines do a 1 year tour overseas. May as well get it over with in the beginning, Beside you could get lucky and get main land Japan....like Fuji or Iwokunie. Good luck and I hope you join our ranks brother. There is nothing like earningt your EGA. Nothing.

They're 2 ear unaccompanied tours now... and Fuji is part of Oki now, and Iwakuni is a shit hole. They're no longer required due to tours being 2 yrs long... something about CMC shortening it to 18mo's but nothing yet bro.
