Lean ground beef, 93/7 or leaner runs around $3.30 a pound here where I live. Sometime you can get some sales and what not....whatever.
I have been buying 80/20 ground beef. I can get it for $2 a pound any day of the week and sometimes I can get it for like $1.50!
The key is to pan fry the beef, then dump the cooked beef into a collander (put a large bowl under it to catch drippings so not to clog sink!). Then you can remove the drippings pan and rinse the beef with the HOTTEST water you can for a couple minutes. I keep running the sink and rinse any leftover stuff down with dish detergent to break down any fat...

This article only has you rinse the beef with a minimal amount of water and the fat content is really reduced there. The chart shows that 3 ounces (cooked) of 80/20 ground beef has 5g of fat AFTER rinsing and blotting. It started out at 15 grams so that is a HUGE change. I figure with some good blotting and LOTS of rinsing I can end up with beef that is 1-1.5g of fat per cooked ounce!
Many of you most likely do this, but its nice to actually see a study/article on it.
