For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting medical studies.
1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
4. The Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
CONCLUSION:
Eat and drink what you like.
Speaking English is apparently what kills you.
Ok, Ok - this is an obvious conclusion for a subset of ectos we consistently hear from that tell us they do not necessarily have to eat "clean" all the time. The interresting part is that those statements are true through epidemiologic rationale. Perhaps there is more truth to everything in moderation after all? And it is more likely the sloth-filled, super-sized United States is more the issue. ;-)

Its all the fast food!!! lol...,
When I lived in Europe, nobody ate any fast food. Restaurants made excellent REAL foods and dishes, not hamburgers, fries, hotdogs, or pizza found in "restaurants" here in america. People there walked every day to the market to pick up fresh produce, meat from the deli markets, and fresh bread from the bakeries. They didnt stock up on food for a week like people do here. But there, markets and such are always within walking distance. People also bike a lot, as on the roads in europe have a special bike lane. Here, your lucky if you find a sidewalk.
I think its a combination of fast food, inactivity, and too much sugar!!

i think obesity in america is due to laziness and technology. there are so many things to do now instead of going outside to play or going to the gym. everybody has computers and x-box's and alot of people would rather do that than get in shape cuz it doesnt take much work to sit on the couch and watch tv. sorry if the post seems hostile i just think that a lot of people want to put the blame on the fast food industries and sweets industries, but the only reason they can stay in business is cuz people buy their products even when they know they are bad for them. then they get mad when they gain weight. i just dont understand it. oh well i am done fuming for now.

I think T_I and snake make great points.
Now, for all the caveman diet fans, if Americans had to chase their bread around the table and kill it like their hunter/gatherer predecessors - perhaps it would be a different story and the low-carb craze would never had existed? Would this then settle the "lazy" argument made by snake? ;-)

yeah after i typed the reply i felt kinda lazy myself. i guess what i meant by "lazy" was i know alot of people who know they are overweight and want to change but dont want to do the hardwork it takes to get changes. they think people who are not overweight and are in good shape are "so lucky", they dont realize it has nothing to do with luck we just work hard to stay in shape.

Asians are more technologically advanced than us Americans and they are not lazy.
Stess my friends...along with fast food is what is killing us.
And stop eating so much food. Don't eat till your stuffed.

I disagree, asians are starting to die more and more of the same causes as Americans. Obesity, heart attacks, are all on the rise in asia.
As for the technology comment, I think that only applies to Japan.

While I am not certain which report you speak of, there is one classic report put out by Western pharmaceutics that does suggest what you say. unfortunately, if you read between the lines of who started this stuff, it is a feebile attempt to run a new marketplace and they have atempted to do this very thing. The funny thing is many of the mroe developed Asian countries also have their own research and benefit from more "riskier" treatments like coated Paclitaxol medication (which is typically seen as an anti-cancer agent) to treat it and it has AND WILL remain LOWER than us Western counterparts.
FYI: The reports from the pharmaceutics attempt to make a claim that Westernization is what is the favored etiology and introduction of more McDonalds' and the like is reason for them to move into the market. This still hovers on Asians adopting a Western lifestyle. Yet, I suppose pharmaceutics would have you believe anything to offer increased rationale for a new move.
