Boxing.

Found the local Kona boxing gym. It is a small dinky place with no air circulation and it is only open from 5-7pm. Run by an 52 year old ex pro boxer named Sonny. You may have seen heem training Leeland in a "Dog the bounty hunter" A&E TV show. It is at the Old Kona Airport Park.

Feels great to just hit the bags for an hour or so, and great cardio.

I'm thinking of kenpo

MMA looks too dangerous for me. I watched Fox Sports Net and the MMA championship fights today, and they were all decided by knockouts in the first round. I mean one guy was knocked out in 18 seconds and they were all in great shape. If the ref wasn't there to stop each fight the knockout victims could have been killed very quickly.

I think I'll just stick to hitting bags. They don't hit back. :)

i was supposed to train under a former UFC fighter for MMA this summer but it fell through.

I want to start Kenpo this summer and do it for about a year or two and then bridge to another fighting style.

If anybody knows any training methods for increasing hand speed please post them. I am hoping to get Sonny fron the Kona boxing gym to show me some basics.

It seems like in the fights I watch on TV the guy with the fastest handspeed almost always wins.

you could try a speed bag. Or when you're training try to really focus on moving your hands and getting them to where they need to be (i.e the heavy bag) as fast as possible. If you try to really concentrate on that it should help. In wrestling for most take downs you want to try to shoot your hands to their leg(s) as quickly has possible, the only real way to train for that is just to focus on it while you're drilling.

Speaking of training with a UFC fighter--i'm working out with Chris Lytle this tuesday 8)

I just started this week hittin' the bag. I do it before i hit the weights for about 15 minutes for now. it's great and i plan on doing it for a while.

I had some coaching from Sonny at the Kona boxing Gym. Didn't get to speed yet. Just using bodyweight as leverage for power behind the punches, as opposed to just using muscular strength. Using muscles tires you out quick, and it is easy to get leverage out of bodyweight. Then there is standing, plant (the FRONT foot), then throw. Also you have to always keep your feet sepearated and dance back and forth WITHOUT letting them come together cause you can get knocked over easy if your weight is not leaning forward. A lot of things to coordinate while hitting a bag, plus always keep your hands up.

It is not as simple as just hitting a bag or as it looks.

Max don't read this I don't want to give away secrets when I get you in the boxing ring.

Try a rubber rope! Bound it to the wall at the height of your shoulders. And hit, hit and hit! Another idea: training in water.

When I was a younger guy I'd been doing kyokushinkai karate. I prefer this one, thai box and kempo to boxing, 'cause boxers don't use their legs. Legs are longer and stronger than arms. Legs are the ultimate weapon.

Another secret thing: do push ups on your fists instead of on your palms!

Good luck guys!

Leeland Chapman, Dog Chapman's (the bounty hunter's) son, was at the Kona Boxing gym training yesterday.

My shoulder is sore from throwing all those jabs. Been having some neck problems too from an old injury. Boxing sure requires lots of cardio. Muscle strength only goes so far if you aren't aerobically ready to do three minute rounds.

Anyway worked on bending front knee and keeping back leg straight, and twsitng the body around for power when throwing the hook after the jab.

It is like i can learn one thing a day and practice it for about an hour before my cardio gives out.

:D Yep. Fighting is not as easy as it seems at first sight. Running, push ups and sit ups... Otherwise you'll be knocked out.
I also planned to go to do some marital arts again, but I'm too busy.

Good luck guys!

They don't have to knock me out, after three minutes of throwing punches and ducking and dancing around, I would probably just collapse from exhaustion without even being hit, cause my cardio isn't good enough, though my bench press and pecs might scare off some fighters, doesn't do any good without the proper cardio work as well.

Bad boxing day today.

First off I was bummed because my dad was having his 70th Birthday coming up. I can't beleive he is 70. Plus I had to buy a condolence/sympathy card for a relative whose father died.

So I guess I wasn't focused at the gym and tweaked my right hand hitting the bag wrong, shoulder was still sore from throwing all those jabs friday,
and the cardio wasn't that great either. Jumped rope for a while.

Left shoulder=icepack
Right pinky = icepack

Should have ordered that VPX Glucosocreme last order. Geesh.

Oh well anybody can have a bad day. :?

yeah me too, I worked out with a trainer today. Thinking i'm just gonna box, dude had me doing all kinds of crazy stuff, then we did the drills. I need a lot of work, and i couldn't believe how tired I got.

Yeah I need to ease into it. Like two days a week maximun.

My weak boxing issues were cardio and shoulder strength. I could mentally power through the cardio, but I really did not have the shoulder development to throw 500-600 jabs a day. Probably i work on the stuff that the girls notice like first the pecs and bi's, shoulders were never a big priority with me til I tried to box. And with respect to toughing out the cardio part of boxing, problem is if you lose focus, you can injure a hand if you hit the bag wrong. I only tweaked mine a little.

So boxing is something I guess I am going to have to work up to and not just try to do it everyday.

Ali boxing marathon on ESPN classic all weekend. Check it out. Ali's hand were too fast for 24 frames per second (film speed) sometimes to catch on film.

Just don't keep your hands down low where he does when you train. He was so fast he was just conserving strength I guess.

BTW. I am going to ask Sonny, whom you may have seen on Dog, Bounty Hunter, to bodyguard me at the next condo homeowners meeting, based on how threatening the last meeting was. Not because I couldn't kick everyone's butt at the meeting, but if Sonny does it after I read my statement if the board members get agitiated (I really press their buttons), well his reputation preceeds him, the police would never arrest him because they wouldn't believe he would act without just provocation.
